The isolate de Lobos is a very small island and is only 6sq.km it sits in the La Bocaina strait that separates Fuerteventura form Lanzarote.
The island is more than 6000-8000 years old according to fossil dating from fossils found on the elevated beach.
La Caldera is the most significant geological element of the landscape of the island. It is a Volcanic cone which is 127m high, semi dismanteled because of the sea erosion which makes it have a horse shoe shape. The side open to the north has a higher level of humidity, which is revealed by the abundance of lichens at the highest level.
The south flank of the Caldera has a thiner vegitable covering due to properties of the substratum and the little influence of the tides. The structure is crowned by a crust of Aa lava, apart from a great landscape value it also has a wide availability of places for nesting of many marine birds species.
- A marine platform.
- An elevated "jandiense"beach with very compact sandstones.
- An accumulation of sands with halopsamofile vegitation.
- A marine level with fossils.
- A cut of the cliff in the deposits which cover the interior of the Caldera.
- Colluviums covered by a thick uphorbia.
It is now a protected island by law and it is completely wild and unspoilt.
The only way to Lobos is by boat, from the port at Corralejo we cross the El Rio straite the stretch of water between Corralejo and Lobos it is only about 10 m deep, go out on the inflatable jet boat it is very bumpy but great fun.
We went out with Peter on his inflatable jet boat for 15 euro each return, Peter will take you out any time from 10am and collect you at a time you request I think the lastest time back is around 5pm the minimum he will take out is two people and the maximum is eight he can be found at the harbour, he also hires jet skis.
Other boat trips operate from the Harbour offering different services from trips around the island to snorkelling and fishing, a glass bottom boat or just dropping you off but most of these leave port at 10 am and are back about 4 pm.
There are no cars or transportation on Lobos with no shops or restaurants except for a small bar at El Puertito (arrangements have to be made before arriving on the island to use this facility) as stock is not kept on the island and has to be taken over daily as do the people who host the bar, you can take your own food and plenty of water with you as there is no shelter from the sun here and you need to stay hydrated.
PLEASE, Please be Considerate with your rubbish and take it back with you or place in the bins provided as all the rubbish has to be removed from the island.
Please respect the natural resources of Lobos at all times and stick to the designated trails, don’t forget your high factor sunscreen as it is very exposed and gets very hot with the sun beating down on the black volcanic rock. Except for the regular boat trips with day-trippers the only people to visit the island are the local fishermen and surfers
There is no camping aloud on Lobos unless you have a permit, which is a must! You have to go to the town hall in La Oliva to obtain a permit.
Such isolation means the conservation of one of the best marine-terrestrial sites in the Canary Islands some of the Fauna cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
It is not prohibited to take any samples of any kind the species are rare and we want them to stay here.
While walking around Lobos be careful not to disturb the colonies of the nesting birds you’ll find there’s several communities of birds that inhabit the island for nesting
Only Rod fishing is permitted on the island and only in designated areas so make sure you stay in the correct spots and dont forget you MUST HAVE A LICENCE, the catch is limited you only keep what you can eat you have to put the rest back live and well.
Some boat trips will cook your catch on board for you saves all the messing about your self.
